George K Stookey, PhD

George K. Stookey

A native of Indiana, Dr. Stookey is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.  He obtained his undergraduate and graduate education at Indiana University and was a member of the faculty of the Indiana University School of Dentistry from 1964 to 2001.  He has served as Director of the Oral Health Research Institute and as Acting Dean, Executive Associate Dean, and Associate Dean for Research of the Indiana University School of Dentistry.  He retired from administrative responsibilities in 2001 to devote fulltime to research and a start-up company, Therametric Technologies, Inc. housed in the Indiana University Emerging Technologies Center in Indianapolis.  Within his company he is conducting research sponsored by the NIDCR on the development of novel technologies for the early detection of dental caries.  His career has been devoted to research on the use of fluoride and other measures for the prevention and control of dental caries as well as on the development of new technologies for the early detection of dental caries.  He has 302 published reports in scientific journals and has contributed to 27 dental text or reference books.  His memberships include International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists, International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA).  Recent awards include the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Dental Caries, the E.W. Borrow Memorial Award for Dental Caries Research from IADR, and the ORCA-Zolnay Prize for Caries Research.
